Vessel Sinks
63Vessel sinks are seeing a resurgence in contemporary bathroom design – and with good reason: their beauty is hard to match.
As contemporary home design gets a facelift for the 21st century, one product which is making a big splash in the bathroom department are vessel sinks.
What are they?
They are basically “standalone” sinks, that sit on top of a bathroom cabinet, counter or vanity unit, rather like a bowl, although they can also be recessed into the cabinet so that only the top part of the sink is visible. Usually they are well-designed with a stylish, minimalist aesthetic, and they are quite simply one of the best-looking, most fashionable things you can put in your bathroom.
Installation
Before investing in this type of sink you should take care to know which types of sink will fit correctly with your bathroom and existing plumbing system. Once you know that, there is a whole world of choice available to you.
Which material?
- Stone
Stone is one of the most popular manufacturing materials for these sinks and can be used to great effect to produce a rustic, traditional and homely feel, while still being completely modern. High quality stone sinks are usually on the upper-end of the market, often using semi-precious stones such as quartz crystal as a building material. Often they have a striking “marbled” effect.
- Glass
There are few things that evoke such a pure aesthetic as water in a glass sink, which makes glass a great, contemporary choice for these sinks. The glass used in these sinks is far from fragile: it is “tempered glass”, which it much stronger than glass typically found in windows, while retaining its beautiful glassy finish. A great choice for design
- Ceramic
Ceramic vessel sinks are again a very popular choice of manufacturing material in vessels. Popular ceramic materials include china, which offers a smooth, brilliant, white surface, that is both practical maintain and impressive to look at. Many ceramic sink types have a non-porous surface which makes them durable and immune to discolouration over time.
- Bronze
Bronze sinks are one of the ultimate bathroom luxuries. They are quite simply stunning to look at, and bring to mind beauty and antiquity. Usually found in the upper-end of the market, a bronze sink cannot fail to impress, and with the right care – a bit of regular polishing and cleaning – they will retain their beautiful finish for years to come.
- Copper
Forget the myth that copper sinks are difficult to maintain. They may need a gentle rub down after use, but besides that they are one of the most hygienic and hassle-free materials for your sink – and of course they look great. Copper vessel sinks have a rustic, homely feel which will only increase over time as the metal develops a “patina”, or colouration, which is caused by exposure to oxygen.
- Stainless Steel
Despite being much more popular as a kitchen feature than in the bathroom, stainless steel is still a simple and affordable choice when investing in vessel sinks.

- Resolved Question: What is the best faucet height for a vessel sink that is 5.5 inches high?
I bought a vessel sink that is 5.5 inches high. I need to know the recommended spout height (the height of the spout where the water comes out) for this sink. I have read that the overall height of the faucet should be 10-12 inches tall but I can not find anything out about the spout height. - 4 months ago
- Resolved Question: Will a sterling silver bowl get ruined if I use it as vessel sink in a bathroom?
I'm on a very tight budget and trying to create a bathroom vanity and sink with what I have on hand. I've got the perfect sized silver bowl that will look great. I just don't know if it will get ruined from the water. It's a guest bath so not a lot of use. If you answer no, can you also leave advice about what kind of maintenance I would need to do if I do use it (is it a simple as not using cleansers and wiping it dry after use or is there something I can treat it with? ) Thanks so much! - 8 months ago

- Resolved Question: Suggestions for bathroom layout and design please?
Hello, I'm designing the layout of our eventual house. After its done, I'll take it to an architect and have them draw it up for real so it can be built. However, my husband has decided to make things difficult on me. Not in a bad way, just in a "our tastes don't match" way so I'm trying to find something that will suit both of us. Yes, this is very strange. I'm a girl and I prefer sleek and modern. He's a guy, and he prefers country style. You'd think it would be the other way around. Our bedroom looks something like this... http://www.sleighbedstore.com/prodimages-cdls/vba/vba-960-553-set2-L.jpg He bought the set before we got together. Its a nice set, don't get me wrong. But I don't think I'd have really chosen it for myself. I'd have chosen something more like this... http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516ljpY9GIL._SL500_AA300_.jpg Honestly, in most of the house, its fairly easy to accommodate this both for our tastes. The hard part seems to be the master bath. I want a glass vessel sink or a porcelain undermount with a granite countertop with dark colors for things like the cabinet and light walls. Somehow, though, I don't think this idea would fit with his style and I really want him to like it too. I'd like to create a spa effect, but I honestly am having a heck of a time finding things for it that I know both of us would like. I know this is a broad question, but do you guys have any ideas? Keep in mind, he's 6 feet tall. I'm 5 feet tall. So we need to find something that will help us meet in the middle. I simply loath our current bathroom. The sink is too high for me and was put in the cabinet 6 inches from the edge (wth were they thinking when they did that) when the standard is 4 inches. But for HIM, he says the cabinet is too short for him and he wishes it were taller. Not sure what to do here. I know he won't like a freestanding sink, but I don't want a traditional set up with the sink mounted on top of the vanity like I've seen in every other house ever. What do you think? - 11 months ago
