Shower Tiles
66Choosing to tile your shower can add luxury, style and value to your shower experience – let this definitive guide show you how!
Different Types of Shower Tiles
- Ceramic
Ceramic tiles are clearly the most popular option for tiling the wall of
your shower. You can find them at any tile retailer in your area or online.
Ceramic tiles are relatively easy to cut, drill and install, meaning that you
do not always have to employ a private decorator to tile your shower for you.
Remember it is always best to shop around and find the best deal.
- Marble
Marble tiles might be an appealing choice for your shower but they are not a practical one. Marble will be easily damaged by the constant barrage of water on its surface, and if you do choose it for your shower it recommended that you completely wipe it dry after every use, wax and polish it regularly, and seal it once every sixth months with a penetrating tile cleaner to prevent damage.

Design Choices
- Size
The size of a tile is an important choice when it comes to
tiling. The more popular tile size for a shower is 4x4”, but you can also
purchase larger tiles at 4x6” or 6x8, or go even higher with “panel” style
tiles that are larger still. You might also be tiling your bathroom floor at
the same time. If so, it is recommended that you use a larger ceramic floor tile size
than in those used in your shower. This is because floors take up much more
space and smaller tiles leave lots of grout lines on your floor, which can
become actually become quite unattractive over time.
- Colour Tips:
- For a small bathroom choose light coloured shower
tiles to give a greater impression of space.
- If you want to add some colour then why not mix and
match your tiles by picking a few coloured tiles to create a colourful pattern
among the lighter coloured tiles.
- The colour of tile you choose will decide the
atmosphere and feel of your shower. For example, you could choose stone
coloured tiles to create a classical feel, or black tiles with a smooth, shiny
finish to create a luxurious feel similar to a jacuzzi or heat room.
- Avoid full-size sections of primary coloured or brightly coloured tiles, unless you want your shower to feel overbearing and imposing. For example, green tiles are more likely to give skin an unhealthy-looking glow, compared to white or cream tiles.
Buying Tips
- Always make sure that you have enough tiles to actually finish the job, and not too many tiles that you end up wasting money on excess tiles. Figure out how many you will need and order a few extra on top to allow for broken tiles and mistakes.
- Always purchase high quality, long-lasting and waterproof adhesive, grout and sealer to maintain the quality of your shower tiles over time.
