Pool Cleaners
61Learn all you need to know about different types of pool cleaners with this complete guide.
Pool cleaners are an essential part of owning a swimming pool. Anybody who has a pool installed at home will know how quickly it becomes contaminated with dust, leave and general debris, and they will also know that cleaning it manually is a slow, time-consuming, and often ineffective process. Which is where a cleaner comes in handy. If you do not want to spend several hours every week cleaning your pool, or you do not want to spend money on employing someone else to clean it for you, then you should already be thinking about investing in a cleaner that will do the job.
Buyer Guide
Before you invest in a cleaner it is important that you find one that will work with your swimming pool. Manufacturers and retailers should always specify which cleaners are suitable for "above ground" pools and which are suitable for "in ground" pools, and it is an important distinction. You should also be looking at the size of pool that a cleaner is capable of dealing with. Retailers will usually let you know in square feet what size of a pool each cleaner can handle. Many cleaners also use a hose which is included in the price, and you should also consider whether the length of the hose will suit your pool's circumstances.
Cleaners are available in a wide variety of styles and suited to a wide range of budgets. One of the most popular kinds is the automatic cleaner, which takes much of the effort out of cleaning a pool. There are three main types of pool cleaners – pressure driven cleaners, suction-side driven cleaners, return-side driven cleaners and robotic cleaners – each of which have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Pressure Driven
Pressure driven cleaners are very popular because they are usually designed in a way that allows them to collect large-sized debris, such as leaves, which other types of cleaner can miss. The main disadvantage of pressure driven pool cleaners is that they usually require a separate pressure, or “booster”, pump, which is an added expense when you are buying your cleaner.
Suction-side Driven
Suction-side driven cleaners are the most popular type of cleaner for above ground pools. They work by attaching to your pool's existing “pump”, or filter, system, and moving throughout the pool while sucking any debris through the filters. They are at an advantage over pressure driven cleaners because they do not require the purchase of the separate pump. One disadvantage of suction-side driven cleaners is that large debris can build up at the filter system which often needs to be removed manually.
Robotic
Robotic cleaners are an increasingly popular and affordable option. They can usually be programmed to move in a certain way around your pool, or they can sense the shape and contours of your pool and clean the entire space automatically over time. This makes them one of the most time-effective pool cleaners.
