Is your notebook computer running slow due to decreasing available hard drive space? Well, instead of struggling the endless cycle of going through your files, deleting files, and uninstalling programs one at a time, then getting it full again why don't you just upgrade your laptop harddrive? This article will provide you of few easy steps in successfully upgrading your space therefore making your notebook in-line with the best laptops sold in the market.
Preparation
In this topic we shall use an example that we are about to replace a 30 GB ThinkPad with an 100 GB hard drive bought online.
You will need software that copies the old drive. This is called cloning. Cloning makes it easier to replace data because you'll just have to swap the 2 and you will have a better hard drive having the exact same data from your old computer, like nothing much except performance and space has changed!
Before upgrading, you must clean up your previous drive, by deleting unnecessary programs and files and defragmenting your disk drive.
Backup of Data
First take your new drive and carefully mount it in the case. Make sure you handle it extra carefully because there are delicate wirings and minute structure inside it.
After turning your computer off, attach the USB cable and then attach the drive to the notebook. After that, put your cloning software inside your computer and boot directly from the CD. When it boots, choose Automatic so that the software will automatically adapt to the way the data will be copied. Then you will have to choose which drive is new and which is old. Them, click OK to begin copying the files.
The copying softwares differ when it comes to partitions. Know what is available in your own software and adjust it to your preferred partitions.
The data transfer takes an hour or so, so you may want to take a break while it runs.
Replacing Harddrives
After copying, turn your computer off. Unplug it, and then remove its battery to prevent any risks for electrocutions. Read your user manual for instructions on how to remove hard drive. Open up your laptop and carefully remove your previous hard drive.
After removing, check if there’s a hard drive cradle. Remove it then attach it to your new drive.
Take your new drive and then put it inside your computer. Close its cover, reinsert the battery and its power cord, and turn it on again. If it doesn’t work, try returning the old drive and perform basic troubleshooting on the new drive then repeat the process. If it worked, congratulations for increasing our system space!
Now, what will you do on the old drive? Well, you can use it as your external backup drive, or just keep it. Considering such you not just have greater internal hard drive space, but most importantly you get to recycle your old drive by using it as for backup. Indeed, nothing is wasted with upgrading your laptop harddrive.
