Glass shelves are a popular, functional and elegant furniture item that will add a touch of class to any room you choose to put them in.

Glass shelves are a popular feature in many modern homes. Many decorators and interior designers choose them over other common shelf styles such as wood, plastic and metal because of their chic, minimalist appearance and simple, hassle-free fitting. These shelves are so easy to install because they are often designed to eliminate the need for frames or hardware that are necessary with other shelf types. The shelves are made from tempered glass which means they are superbly resistant to wear, tear and breakage, especially when compared to the glass you will find in windows or doors. They are popularly used as shelves for books, wall units, displays of art, and as storage for home entertainment centres, such as CD players, DVD players and televisions. They make the perfect feature in rooms designed with a minimalist or greyscale style of interior decoration.

One popular design feature are individual shelves. These are usually fitted to to clear, aluminum brackets, or to a small bolt, that is screwed into the wall. Glass shelves usually have very little in the way of attachments because they are designed to be unobtrusive and minimalistic. Because of that they are often very easy to fit without any DIY or home improvement experience, and they are known as “floating” shelves, because they appear to float upon the wall they are fitted to. Another popular feature apart from single shelves, are shelf cabinets, which shelf contain several shelves stacked together. Instead of being attached to the wall, shelf cabinets sit on the floor and make the perfect display case for book collections, artwork, or ornaments. In these cases they are often used with lighting features to highlight the items on display.

The transparency of glass shelves is a feature that can help you decide to choose one model over another. Manufacturers and retailers should be able to tell you how transparent, or see through, a particular model of shelf is. Common names which are used to describe the transparency, thickness and colour of particular shelf models include terms such as Frosted Glass, Clear Glass, Black Glass, Green Glass and Blue Glass. Another alternative to the “floating shelf” style talked about before, is the “suspended shelf”. Although they work fine on walls such as brick, “floating shelves” are often problematic when they are installed on non-solid walls, such as plasterboard. For this reason “suspended shelves” offer the perfect solution. Rather than being fitted to the wall like a “floating shelf”, they use thin steel cables to suspend them from the wall or ceiling, and they are suitable for all wall types, including plasterboard.

With such a wide variety of choice available it should not be difficult to find the perfect set of glass shelves for you and your home.

Great information. Glass shelves can serve two purposes. They can help with storage by allowing for a place for special nicknacks, candles or family photos. They also give at room a very stylish touch.
