Electric cookers have surpassed gas cookers as the ultimate choice when it comes to functionality in the kitchen – find out why in this complete guide.

Electric cookers feature in the kitchens of nearly every new home nowadays, and in many old homes too, as people come to realise the relative ease, efficiency and safety of using electric compared to a traditional fuel powered cooker. There is a huge variety of cooker styles available on the market, but first it is worth thinking about why you should be making the switch to an electrical cooker in the first place.

Safety. Although modern gas cookers as generally very safe, people with older gas models should at least start to think about switching to electric cookers, if only to avoid the fire hazards associated with cooking with gas, such as happen when someone accidentally leaves the gas turned on after use.

Efficiency. Modern styles of electric cookers are able to hear up rapidly – much faster than their fuel-powered cousins, which makes them much more efficient and speedy when it comes to cooking, which counts for a lot in today's fast paced society.

Ease. By going electric instead of gas with your cooker, you are greatly simplifying the cooking process. No longer do you a separate temperature switch and annoying ignition switch, now everything is done at the flick of a single switch. Easy!

Different Cooker Types

Range Cookers. Range cookers are a traditional style that remains immensely popular today, due to their homely appearance and general usefulness. They are basically one big body containing the full range of cooking appliances, usually with up to three ovens and a range of hobs on the top.

Freestanding. Freestanding cookers usually resemble a range cooker that has been cut in half down the middle. You can still get two ovens and up to four hobs or grills on a freestanding cooker, and they are perfect for people with less room to in their kitchens, or who already have a space where they want their new cooker to go.

Built in Ovens and Hobs. Built in ovens and hobs are not entire cookers in themselves, but rather they are individual cooker parts, designed to fit seamlessly in to the rest of the kitchen furniture. These often come when you buy a fully designed kitchen since they have to be built into the cabinets or furniture, but many retailers also sell them individually, either as cookers or as hobs, which the buyer must then install into their kitchen.

Top 5 Brands

  1. Hotpoint
  2. Electrolux
  3. Zanussi
  4. Beko
  5. Belling

These are the top brands but it is always worthwhile to do a good amount of shopping around before you actually buy your cooker. Things you should be considering include, does this cooker come with a guarantee or warranty? Can I find the same cooker at a better price somewhere else? How easily will I be able to fit this cooker in my kitchen? After considering all of that you will be much better equipped to make your choice, and once you do you will not want to go back from electric cookers.
