A complete guide to animal massage, including reasons for doing it and general standards of care.

Animal massage can be an important medical need for all types of animals and pets, as a way of dealing with physical injuries and other debilitating issues faced by animals. The benefits or regular massages when applied to humans, are well known to doctors, physiotherapists and therapists around the world, and it is only natural that the same theory can be applied to our animal friends, to ensure their physical wellbeing. Not only can massage be used as a form of physical treatment for animals, but regular massaging can also be a way of screening and assessing the overall health and development of animals, from their youth into old age.

So who uses animal massage, and who should use it. Well, it is most common and effective among animals who compete regularly in any kind of show, sport or contest. Because of the regular aspect of physical competition, these animals can easily be strained around their muscles, ligaments and tendons, which is why massage is extremely effective at discovering and treating injuries which have occurred to them during competitions or sport. Probably the most common animals who are treated with massages are canines and equines - or dogs and horses. Horses in particular are susceptible to strain and injury through the kind of activities they go through while being involved in sports such as show jumping, horse racing, rodeo, polo and other equestrian pursuits. For these type of horses, having a professional massage therapist on hand to examine the horse regularly, can be a vital and important part of the horse's physical health and fitness regime.

As well as horses, canines - or dogs - can also receive large health benefits from regular massage treatment. This is especially true in conditions where the dog is regularly participating in competitions or sport, such as field herding, rally obedience or greyhound racing. Due to the physical strain which dogs who feature in this kind of activities can encounter, animal massage can provide significant health benefits in tracking, identifying and treating any physical problems which may arise. Other situations where these type of massage treatments can be highly beneficial to dogs include dogs used on farms - for activities such as sheep herding - or dogs who frequently compete in physical contests and competitions. These kind of treatments are often available from many vets, but there are also independent animal masseurs who can perform equally effective treatments upon animals.

It can be difficult to find someone who is able to practice massages for your animal or animals, but there are places where you are guaranteed to find such professionals with ease. For example, in the United Kingdom (Great Britain) there is an organisation called the Association of Complementary Animal Therapies (ACAT) which specialises in registering and providing a code of conduct and standards for treatment in animal massage.
